Final Design of the Intersection Realignment Project

This project is now complete.

Working with GPI, the engineering consultants for the Broadway Streetscape Project, the City is redesigning the intersection of Broadway, Grand Street, Prince Street, and Pine Grove Avenue. The project will realign this hazardous juncture to reduce traveler confusion, crashes and alarming near-misses. Funding is provided by the NYSDOT Multi-Modal Program, which was secured with the assistance of NYS Assemblymember Kevin Cahill.

The intersection, which is currently offset, is not safe for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians navigating their way through. In fact, people regularly attest to experiencing near-misses. For example, when a motorist coming from the YMCA wants to turn left onto Broadway, they can find themselves jockeying for passage with motorists going straight from Grand onto Pine Grove.

Worse still, from 2013 to 2018, there were 29 crashes at the scene with seven resulting in injuries.

The intersection is located at the terminus of the Broadway Streetscape Project that is now under way. The design will integrate with that project, possibly with a rest-stop at the endpoint of the new protected bike lane (also known as a cycle track) that will run from the roundabout. Traffic signalization will be programmed to coordinate with the other signals on Broadway. And pedestrians and bicyclists traveling on the Empire State Trail, who will traverse the intersection, will be directed to Prince Street to continue along the trail route.

To accommodate the realignment, the existing Planet Wings building was recently demolished, leaving enough space for the creation of an urban square, an art space, or a place for historical interpretation. We hope you'll tell us what you think!

One possible concept for a public square in the space that will be created by the Broadway and Grand Intersection Re-alignment. To view more possible concepts, click on Presentation of Landscaped (Green) Area Concepts (4.07 MB) (pdf)

At a virtual public meeting on June 24th, the City and GPI shared the realignment plan and options for landscape concepts to provide people with an opportunity to share ideas and feedback. If you missed the meeting, please listen to the recording: Broadway & Grand Intersection Improvements Public Meeting.
