Competition Update April 2, 2024: The City released Addendum No. 1 to the Request for Proposals today. It contains answers to questions prospective respondents submitted by the March 29th deadline. It can be found here: RFP K24-08 Addendum No. 1

Project Description:

With funds from the American Rescue Plan Act, Mayor Noble is pleased to announce the launch of a Small Monument Competition to coincide with the 2024 spring/summer construction of the new Post Office Park at Broadway and Grand Street.

The goal of this competition is to gather proposed concepts and identify a winning monument design to be fabricated and permanently installed in the new park. Applicants are asked to provide concepts that pay homage to the memory of the lost post office that once stood on the site but fell victim to urban renewal in 1970. Built between 1904-1908, the post office was a notable limestone and granite structure with a rounded façade and Classical and Beaux Arts design elements.

The park’s design/construction plans include two 3’ high x 3' wide round cement pedestals for the support of artwork such as a sculpture or monument. During the public engagement phase for the park’s design, community members voiced that they would like to see installation of a work that pays homage to the lost post office and serves as a reminder that the City’s architectural assets must be preserved for future generations.

The City requests proposals from interested individuals, companies or partners, including but not limited to sculptors, architects, fabricators and other types of designers and manufacturers, to create and build a small monument for permanent placement on one of the pedestals as described above; artwork for the second pedestal will be selected in a separate future program as yet to be defined and scheduled. Applicants may identify which pedestal they deem most suitable for their design. The full RFP outlining the details and requirements is located here: Post Office Park Small Monument Competition Request for Proposals.

For the purposes of this competition, the City defines a monument as a statue, sculpture, or other structure marking the former site of a historically and culturally significant asset. Respondents should present design concepts that interpret their vision of how to pay homage to the 1908 structure.

All ideas are welcome! We look forward to seeing your proposal by the competition deadline on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
