Kingston Point has a long history as a treasured recreational and natural-resource asset on our riverfront. But today it's at high risk of being lost to sea-level rise resulting from climate change. To address this growing threat, earlier this year the City procured climate adaptive design landscape architects Supermass Studio with engineering partners eDESIGN DYNAMICS and environmental graphic designers emphas!s. This team of specialists evaluated potential sea-level rise scenarios and assessed their implications — for both Kingston and the larger Hudson River estuary ecosystem. 

Our goal with this project is to ultimately create a well-connected and resilient riverfront park that can remain viable as a public and natural asset for decades to come.

Over the summer, Supermass began working on developing an overall framework with engineering concepts that balances opportunities for ecological health, resiliency and recreation. They examined the site’s complex interplay between its shifting estuarine ecosystem and the City’s need to provide accessible recreational lands, protect valuable natural resources, and maintain economic viability. 

The design team also evaluated the hydraulic regime, soil conditions, light regime, and existing grassland habitats of the site to inform the creation of viable concepts that can be implemented. They developed three design alternatives that were made available for comment from community stakeholders in late summer. 

To help facilitate the compilation of concerns and preferences, Supermass developed a public survey, which was available to interested community members; the results of the survey are posted to the right.

We are delighted to announce that, with your input, the City was able to determine the best direction for Kingston Point — Design Alternative 2, Linear Terraces Concept.

Please take a look at the Preliminary Design Report to the right, which describes the design team's findings and all three alternatives that were part of the public survey. A link to the public presentation is also next door.

Our next step going forward is to secure additional funding to complete the final design and construction documents and to construct the project. We'll keep you posted!
