The City of Kingston has received grants from the USDA Forest Service and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to further develop its urban street tree canopy. These projects help support the City’s tree planting initiatives such as the goal of 1,000 new trees by 2030. These programs are managed by the City of Kingston Urban Forester.

2023 USDA Forest Service Urban & Community Forestry Grant

In September 2023, the City of Kingston received a grant for $500,000 to hire an Urban Forester through 2028. Included in the funding is a small budget for tree plantings and removals. In 2024 and 2025, the City grant funding contributed to the planting of 44 new street trees and the removal of 5 dead, hazardous trees. Learn more about the USDA UCFG Grant here.

2024 NYS DEC Urban Forest Management Plan Implementation Grant

In September 2024, the City of Kingston received a grant for $732,374 for the purpose of Implementing an Urban Forest Management Plan through tree plantings, prunings, removals, and planting site conditioning. This funding comes via the Inflation Reduction Act and the U.S. Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Grant program, and is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Programs in Kingston utilizing these grant funds are currently under development and to be announced in 2026. Learn more about this grant award here.
