We built most Kingston streets for people, not for cars.

And we need to make our city streets safe for all travelers by prioritizing the most vulnerable: pedestrians, bicyclists, bus riders, and all those with lesser mobility and experience such as children, those in wheelchairs and the elderly.

Just as it handles the roadways, the city should take over and maintain, repair & plow the sidewalks .

In order to reverse our current priority for cars which has led to rampant & oft-ignored traffic violence becoming an enormous socioeconomic and cultural issue, some things we can try - - which apply equally to Franklin Street:

- - lowering the speed limit to 15 miles per hour. If obeyed it would save fuel as well as lives by not accelerating to high speeds in between the stops required at most intersections.

- - installing traffic-calming devices

- - making Henry one-way for cars, at least between Clinton Avenue and Broadway; we could have an opposite-direction one-way on Cedar and/or Franklin streets

- - replacing all-way stop signs with all-way solid-red lights which trigger to green only when cars are waiting; most motorists stop at a red light, whereas a red octagon equals a roll-through for most

- - training neighbors, not police, to perform traffic safety education and enforcement. They would be armed, not with a gun, but rather with information on how responsible motoring can help keep our neighborhoods free of traffic violence.
